Product description

PeraFix (B6)

Concrete and plaster additive for the production of polymer–modified mortar (PMM) and polymer-modified concrete (PMC). PeraFix improves workability, increases flexural and compressive strength, adhesion, impermeability and durability properties of mortars and concrete. PeraFix is used for modification of hydraulic binders in applications including repair mortar, flooring, rendering, bonding, mineral sealing slurries and as cement based adhesive.

As building sand differs in grain size and contaminations (salts etc.) and there are different kinds of Portland Cement available, trials should be carried out before application, to familiarise yourself with the use of PeraFix, as well as determining the optimum quantities to be used. PeraFix should always be added to the water before the mixture is added to the cement sand/stone mix. PeraFix is not a "super-plasticiser" (for use in high-density concrete), although it has plasticising properties and a reduction in make-up water is usually possible. PeraFix is active in the mortar (better workability, flow, plasticising action, colour development, etc.), as well as in the cured concrete (higher transverse and compressive strength, improved elasticity and adhesion, as well as better colour development and colour retention in pigmented systems). PeraFix "cures" by the loss of water, therefore we recommend that PeraFix modified concrete be left to dry after hardening. PeraFix is not recommended for underwater use.

Surface Preparation and Application Instructions:

  • New plastered walls and brickwork - Ensure surface is completely dry. Seal surfaces with SEALER (MB-30). Then proceed as follows: After two hours drying time, apply the PLAST FINE (MRL) with a stainless steel trowel and smooth down to the thickness of the largest pebbles (+/- 1mm).Level the plaster to an even and smooth surface with a clean stainless steel trowel (Do not use plastic or wooden trowels). Make sure that the trowel remains clean at all times.

  • Previously painted surfaces: Remove all dust, dirt, grease and loose or flaking paint. Glossy paints must be sanded to a matt finish (it is not recommended to apply PLAST FINE (MRL) over Enamel paints). Make good any holes and cracks with FLEX FILL (code MXRP) and continue as in (a).

  • Lime washed surfaces: Remove limewash with a steel brush. Seal surface with 2 (two) coats of solvent-based bonding liquid, leaving a drying time of at least 4 hours in-between coats. After 24 hours drying time continue as in (a).

  • Surfaces with microbiological problems (fungal or algae growth): Liberally apply an approved detergent and leave for 48 hours. Remove all loose matter and fungal or algae growth with a wire brush. Apply 1 coat anti-fungal SEALER (on request only), followed by anti-fungal PLAST FINE. Where a primer coat is used, this too should be anti-fungicidal. Microbiological problems are usually caused by faulty construction or design - find and remove the cause of the problem whenever possible.

Surface Preparation

  1. New plastered walls and brickwork: Ensure surface is completely dry. Seal surfaces with SEALER (MB-30). Two different methods of application may be employed on the prepared substrate:

    1. After two hours drying time, apply a primer coat (PVA GRADE 2 –MEL), colour matched to the PLAST SCRATCH). After a further 2 hours drying time apply the PLAST SCRATCH with a steel trowel and smooth down to the thickness of the pebbles. The plaster is then patterned by means of rubbing down with a plastic trowel, taking care that the trowel remains clean at all times. The pattern may be varied horizontally, vertically, circular, perpendicular or crossed.

    2. The PLAST SCRATCH may also be applied directly to the prepared substrate, in which case care should be taken that the pebbles, penetrating onto the substrate, do not leave discolourations in the plaster. When this second method is employed, White PLAST SCRATCH may be used and subsequently over coated with a PVA GRADE 1 (MEAG) OR PVA GRADE 2 (MEL) of the required colour.

  2. Previously painted surfaces: Remove all dust, dirt, grease and loose or flaking paint. Glossy paints must be sanded to a matt finish (it is not recommended to apply PLAST SCRATCH over Enamel paints). Make good any holes and cracks with Pera Mastix and continue as in (a).

  3. Lime washed surfaces: Remove limewash with a steel brush. Seal surface with BONDING LIQUID (MB-100) (preferably 2 coats). After 24 hours drying time continue as in (a).

  4. Roughcast and textured mineral plaster finishes: Sand down walls to a smooth, even finish, wash down, leave to dry and apply 1 coat BONDING LIQUID (MB-100). After 24 hours drying time continue as in (a).

  5. Surfaces with microbiological problems (fungal or algae growth): Liberally apply an approved detergent and leave for 48 hours. Remove all loose matter and fungal or algae growth with a wire brush. Apply 1 coat anti-fungal Pera Seal, followed by anti-fungal PLAST SCRATCH.

Application Instructions

Plaster mixture: Add 1Ltr of Cement Additive (MB-5) to 50kg of cement. The B-5 must be added to the water, before addition of sand and cement!

NB: For application surfaces, other than above, please contact our sales department.

Application Instructions

  1. Consolidation of old crumbling cement floors:
    1. Clean thoroughly.
    2. Saturate floor with PeraFix: Water in a ratio of 1:4.
    3. Avoid an excess of PeraFix:Water, as this can lead to the formation of a film, that becomes sticky under the influence of heat and can be peeled off.

  2. Coating of freshly laid cement floors - to strengthen the surface and as protection against dirt:
    1. Dilute PeraFix with water in a ratio of 1:4.
    2. Apply to floor, as soon as it can be walked upon, by means of spraying, or with a rubber spreader.
    3. This measure is particularly important if surfacing is ultimately to be carried out.

  3. Reducing shrinkage and the danger of cracking in floating floors:
For this, 1 to 2% PeraFix, calculated on the cement content, is added to the mortar. If poor quality sand is used this amount should be increased to 10%. The PeraFix is best added to the make-up water or, if a mechanical mixer is used, directly to the mixer. It is advisable to apply a coating, as described in "2", to the floating floor.

  4. Levelling compound for mastic asphalt:
For this purpose PeraFix is mixed with fine, washed sand or with river sand until a mixture, which can easily be trowelled, is produced. The ratio of PeraFix: Sand is about 1:3 by weight.

  5. Levelling compound for concrete:
Portland Cement (type PZ 275) is mixed with fine river sand (max. particle size: 0,5 - 1 mm), in a ratio of 1:1,5 to 1:2 per weight. The coarser the grains, the more sand can be used. The mixture is moistened with PeraFix:Water in a ratio of 1:1. This mixture is applied to the cleaned substrate that has been saturated with a mixture of Perafix:Water in a ratio 1:4. The applied levelling compound must be kept moist for 1 to 2 days. The addition of fused alumina cement, to the Portland cement, accelerates hardening. We recommend the application of a mixture as described in "2".

  6. Repair of damaged or uneven concrete flooring:
Unevenness in cement flooring and in concrete is, after thorough cleaning of the substrate, saturated with a mixture of PeraFix:Water in a ratio of 1:4. Before this coating has dried, a mortar, consisting of 3 parts by volume of sand (particle size 0 to 3 mm) and 1 part by volume ordinary Portland cement, compounded with a mixture of PeraFix:Water in a ratio of 1:4, is used to make good the damage. More severe defects can be prefilled with this mortar and a levelling compound, as described under 5, applied. This mortar can also be used for the preparation of actual flooring.

  7. Increasing adhesion and elasticity, as well as reducing the tendency to crack, of terrazzo or single layer
hard concrete flooring: The substrate is pre-treated with a mixture of Perafix:Water in a ratio of 1:4. The mortar is prepared with the same mixture, instead of water. In the case of double-layer, hard concrete flooring, these recommendations apply only to the lower layer.

  8. Base for bonding old and new concrete:
The old, thoroughly cleaned floor, is primed with a mixture of PeraFix:Water in a ratio of 1:4. A mixture, consisting of 1 to 2 parts by volume of sand, particle size 0 to 3 mm and, 1 part by volume of cement, mixed with PeraFix:Water in a ratio of 1:4, is brushed into the wet priming coat. Ordinary cement mortar (or concrete) is cast onto this base, while it is still wet.

  9. Towelling compounds based on cement or casein for substrates:
These can be made to adhere more easily to the substrate if a mixture of PeraFix:Water, in a ratio of 1:4 to 1:8, is used instead of water for preparing the compound.

  10. Smoothing, waterproofing compound for spraying, brushing or towelling:
A mixture of: 1 part by volume PeraFix 1 part by volume Ordinary white or grey Portland cement 2 parts by volume Water is thoroughly stirred and applied to the surface by means of a spray gun (2,5mm jet, 2.5 atg.), a brush or a smoothing trowel. By further dilution with water, a thinner coat can be applied. This mixture can also be used as a decor plaster, but the mixture may have to be adjusted by up to 1 part by volume clean fine sand (0 to 1mm). The cured coating may then be coated with any conventional builder’s paint.

  11. Improved adhesion of renderings:
The bond strength of wall and ceiling renderings can be improved, and their elasticity increased, especially if
the surfaces are smooth, by the addition of 5% PeraFix, calculated on the make-up water

  12. Increasing the tensile strength of synthetic/natural anhydrite flooring or plaster moulds:
The addition of 5% PeraFix, calculated on the binder increases the bending tensile strength of synthetic anhydrite flooring by approximately 50% (measured on 4 X 4 X 16 cm prisms after thorough drying). The same applies to natural anhydrite. Plaster moulds (e.g. models) can be made practically unbreakable and highly abrasion resistant by a correspondingly high addition of PeraFix, even if the structural components are thin. The desired amount must be determined by preliminary trials, depending on the stress and type of plaster used.

  13. Grouting for all types of wall and floor tiles:
A dry mix consisting of: White cement 300 p.b.w. Pera marble dust 600 p.b.w. Rutile Titanium Dioxide 100 p.b.w. is made into a paste with a mixture of PeraFix:Water in a ratio of 1:9. The Titanium Dioxide may be replaced by any inorganic light fast pigment, or mixtures thereof, for coloured grouting. Care must be taken, that these pigments are compatible with cement.

NB: Remember - trials should be carried out before application, to familiarise yourself in the use of PeraFix, as well as determining the optimum quantities to be used. PeraFix is not a "super-plasticiser" (for use in high-density concrete), although it has plasticising properties and a reduction in make-up water is usually possible. PeraFix is active in the mortar (better workability, flow, plasticising action, colour development, etc), as well as in the cured concrete (higher transverse and compressive strength, improved elasticity and adhesion, as well as better colour development and colour retention in pigmented systems). PeraFix "cures" by the loss of water, therefore we recommend that PeraFix modified concrete be left to dry after hardening. PeraFix is not recommended for use underwater.

For application surfaces, other than above, please contact our sales department.

Surface Preparation

  1. New cement, natural stone, non glazed absorbing tiles:
Clean surface of dirt, cement- and mortar droppings. Make sure surface is dry and clean.

  2. Old cement, natural stone, non glazed absorbing tiles:
Clean surface thoroughly from all dirt, remove wax ect. Make sure surface is clean and dry.

  3. Plastered walls coated with a PVA new
Make sure surface is clean and dry.

Surface Preparation

  1. As a water repellent and anti-efflorescent barrier under film forming coatings on porous substrates:
Clean surface by means of scrubbing or steam / high-pressure water cleaning and allow substrate to flash off. Ensure that the substructure is free of oil and grease to ensure proper penetration of the ANTI SALT PRIMER. Repair crumbly or poor finishes as the ANTI SALT PRIMER has no binding.

  2. As a water repellent barrier under film forming coating systems:
In order to prevent water penetration through hairline cracks and defects in impermeable exterior paint systems, ANTI SALT PRIMER can be used as a primer on the plaster, under such coatings. The substrate must be clean and dry and application should take place before painting of the topcoat.

Surface Preparation and Application Instructions

  1. Joints and cracks:
Surface must be clean and dry. Break open large cracks and remove all loose plaster. Soak work area with SEALER (MB-30) and allow to dry. Add Marbel Dust Fine (MD200) +/- 10% to the REPAIR COMPOUND, to form a thick paste and apply 2 to 3 layers. Allow sufficient drying time between layers. Smooth surface while still wet, as it cannot be sanded when dry.

  2. Sealing of roofs:
Remove loose screws and narrow hole by inserting matchsticks or wood shavings. Dip screw into REPAIR COMPOUND and fasten firmly. Holes and gaps can be sealed by flashing. Do not try to seal corroded roofs, as this would only be a temporary solution.

  3. Flashing:
Make sure surface is clean and dry. For plastered surfaces seal with SEALER (MB-300. Apply a thin layer of REPAIR COMPOUND and cover with netting. Allow to dry and apply a second layer. Smooth surface while still wet, as it cannot be sanded when dry.

NB: REPAIR COMPOUND may not be used to repair cracks in swimming pools or any other area, where it will be covered by water. Tools must be cleaned with water immediately after use. SEALER (MB-30) and roof coatings see relevant datasheets. Remember a system is only as good as the substrate. For application surfaces, other than above, please contact our sales department.

Application Instructions

Cracks and small holes in plaster
Surface must be clean and dry. Remove any crumbling plaster. Apply FLEX FILL into cracks with a skimming blade. Leave to dry and sand smooth. If necessary apply again.

NB: FLEX FILL may be used to repair cracks in swimming pools or any other area where it will be covered by water. Tools must be cleaned with water immediately after use. For application surfaces, other than above, please contact our sales department.

Product Application

Floated floors (to reduce shrinkage and cracking):
On the thoroughly cleaned surface apply a mix of 1 part PeraFix with 4 parts water. Apply mixture to new floor surface, as soon as it can be walked on. Avoid an excess of the mixture, as this can lead to the formation of a film that can peel off. Immediately apply the following compound (apply before coating has dried). Add 1 to 2% PeraFix calculated on the cement content to the make-up water for the mortar. For poor quality sand contact our sales department as more PeraFix must be used.

Leveling compound for concrete:
On the clean surface apply a mixture of 1 part PeraFix with 4 parts water. Saturate the surface with the mixture and immediately apply the following compound (apply before coating has dried). Mix appropriate Portland Cement with fine sand (size 0,5 to 1mm). Mix PeraFix with water in the ratio 1:1 and prepare the cement /sand mixture with it. Apply this mixture to the prepared substrate. The leveling compound must be kept moist for 7 days.

Repair of damaged or uneven concrete flooring:
On the thoroughly cleaned surface apply a mixture of 1 part PeraFix with 4 parts water. Saturate the surface with the mixture and immediately apply the following compound (apply before coating has dried). Produce a mortar consisting of 3 parts by volume sand (particle size 1 to 3mm) and 1 part by volume appropriate Portland Cement. Mix PeraFix with water in the ratio 1:4 and prepare the cement /sand mixture with it. Apply this mixture to the prepared substrate. The leveling compound must be kept moist for 7 days.

Base for bonding old and new concrete:
The old, thoroughly cleaned floor, is primed with a mixture of PeraFix:Water in a ratio of 1:4. Mix sand and cement in a ratio of 1 to 2 parts by volume sand (particle size 1 to 3 mm) and 1 part by volume cement. Add appropriate PeraFix:Water in a ratio of 1:4. This mixture is brushed into the wet priming coat. Ordinary cement mortar (or concrete) is cast onto this base, while it is still wet.

Surface Preparation and Application

PLASTER
Plaster must be dry and solid. Apply POWDER FILL. After drying of filler, sand to smooth surface. Apply SEALER (MB-30) over filler.

PRIMED PLASTER
It is preferred to fill up holes and blemishes once the walls are primed. This gives better visibility. POWDER FILL can be applied on PVA based wall-primers, but must be sealed with SEALER (MB-30).

EXISTING PAINTED SURFACES
POWDER FILL can be applied on existing PVA paint coating. For use on eggshell or high gloss enamels sand substrate well to a matt surface. Apply POWDER FILL. After drying of filler, sand to smooth surface. Apply SEALER (MB-30) over filler.

WOOD, FIBREBOARD OR SOFTBOARD
FLEX FILL (MXRP) is recommended for this application.

Application Instructions

New galvanized iron:
Apply 2 to 3 coats COOLROOF directly onto degreased and cleaned surface.

Previously coated mineral substrate
On previously coated, prepared surfaces, 2 coats of COOLROOF should be applied.

New fiber cement
Make sure fiber cement is free from dust & other contaminations by means of stiff brush – if necessary wash with clean water & let dry properly. Apply one coat COOLROOF thinned with 15% water, leave to dry and apply two coats un-thinned.

NB: Do not paint a roof in full sun (hot substrate) or very windy conditions. Make sure that the coating is dry, before it rains. Stir well before and during use. The optimal cooling properties of COOLROOF are only achieved with a white or pastel colour. For application surfaces, other than above, please contact our sales department.

"DO'S" and "DON'TS" when using PLAST FINE (RL):

  • Never apply PLAST FINE in direct sunlight. Use a canvas or plastic sheet to shade areas where work is in progress. Whenever possible, apply on side of structure facing away from sun.

  • On very large areas apply PLAST FINE in panels (or fields). Allowance should be made for these panels during the design stage of a project. These panels would ideally encompass no more than the area that can be plastered by a single applicator in a shift. Wherever necessary, care must be taken that these panels are easily accessible from the scaffolding.

  • Where it is possible apply only one batch to a continuous panel or wall. Where this is impossible, ensure that the colour of all batches used, matches.

  • A single panel or wall should never be left uncompleted.

  • If more than one person is doing the application, care must be taken that the resultant pattern of any one person matches that of all the others.
  • When choosing persons to apply the plaster, take note that plasterers are better suited than painters.

NB: Remember - a system is only as good as the substrate. Replaster walls where the old plaster is crumbling or detached. Never use inferior sealers or primers. One coat CLEAR COAT (MB-9) is recommended for interior application over these systems in high traffic areas, to improve gloss and cleanability and to decrease dirt retention. For application surfaces, other than above, please contact our sales department or the technical department.

"Do's" and "Don'ts" when using Plast Scratch

  • Never apply PLAST SCRATCH in direct sunlight. Use a canvas or plastic sheet to shade areas where work is in progress. Whenever possible, apply on side of structure facing away from sun.

  • A single panel or wall should never be left uncompleted. If work on a panel is interrupted for any reason, care must be taken that the working edge of the PLAST SCRATCH is kept moist, so that application can continue without a joint showing in this zone.

  • If more than one person is doing the application, care must be taken that the resultant pattern of any one person matches that of all the others.
  • When choosing persons to apply the plaster, take note that plasterers are better suited than painters. It is however advisable to include an experienced painter in the team, because PLAST SCRATCH manifests properties of both a paint, as well as a plaster.

NB: Remember - a system is only as good as the substrate. Replaster walls where the old plaster is crumbling or detached. Never use inferior sealers or primers. Application Instructions

  1. New cement, natural stone, non-glazed absorbing tiles:
Apply two coats of Clear Coat leaving an over coating time of 5 hours. The finished surface must dry for at least 24 hours, before it is open for traffic.

  2. Old cement, natural stone, non glazed absorbing tiles:
    Proceed as in a.

  3. Plastered walls coated with a PVA new
Apply one coat of Clear Coat.

Application Instructions

As a water repellent and anti-effloescent barrier under film forming coating systems
ANTI SALT PRIMER must be applied to the masonry as liberally as possible and very porous substrates must be coated twice, working wet in wet (apply the next coat, when substrate has absorbed the previous one and no longer shines). Remove excess product that is not absorbed. Tools such as brushes, rollers or spraying equipment are suitable for this purpose. Most synthetic paints (e.g.: Vinyl, Acrylic, Silicone) show good wetting and adhesion to substrates treated in this way, but preliminary trials are recommended, especially where cheaper types of paint are used. Do not thin the topcoat to be used. This type of pre-treatment of concrete substrates is recommended especially under coastal weather conditions, where water (and salt) damage is a common problem.

NB: Do not use ANT SALT PRIMER as a bonding liquid on substrates that are crumbly were the plaster has deteriorated, as the binding powers of this product are not sufficient to restore the plaster soundness to support subsequent coatings. Do not use on damp or wet surfaces. This product is not suitable for rendering gypsum water repellent. Do not use on previously coated surfaces.

Application Instructions

TROWEL APPLICATION:
The sand should be mixed with Pera Sand-Coat B-911 in the following ratio:
5 kg Sand : 1L Pera Sand-Coat B-911

BRUSH / ROLLER APPLICATION:
The most common mixing ratio for brush / roller application is:
6 Litre Sand : 2 Litre Water : 1,5 Litre Pera Sand-Coat B-911

Note: As sand composition differs from region to region, the mixing ratio might differ slightly. Therefore we recommend you doing your own trials on site prior to mixing larger quantities.

The “Sand – plaster” can be mixed in a clean concrete mixer. This plaster gets very hard and dries quickly and will stick to the concrete mixer. It is thus very important to clean it regularly with clean water to avoid the plaster sticking to the concrete mixer.

Since 1962, Peralin Paints is Namibia’s leading and most diversified paint producer, using only the finest raw materials for premium quality PVA paints, texture coatings and plasters, roof coatings and special coatings.

With a fully equipped modern factory and a cutting-edge research laboratory, all products incorporate highest technology standards and superior performance, especially in the harsh sub-Saharan climate conditions. To ensure a high standard of quality, every product is subject to strict quality control at the factory.

Our product quality and durability make Peralin Paints the first choice for major industrial projects, such as the Namibia Institute of Public Administration and Management building, the Meteorological Service building, United Nations building, Metropolitan Life, the Government Office Park and a significant number of schools, institutions and government buildings to mention only a few.

The 21st century has transformed Peralin Paints into a world-standard paints manufacturer with retail outlets in Windhoek, Swakopmund and Ongwediva.

With our endeavor to improve and develop superior products, we focus on paints that are one-system coatings, meaning that the paints do not require any primer or undercoat anymore, as those innovative products are self-priming. All products are also naturally water-based to guarantee an environmentally friendly application. In 2020, Peralin Paints joined the Green Building Counil of Namibia, showing our commitment to apply environment-friendly and sustainable green building methods.
